Is coconut water healthy?

Is Coconut Water Good for You?

This summer, when you see yourself, poolside sipping a cool beverage, what beverage will you chose?

Hopefully you see yourself hydrating with spring water, maybe with some electrolytes added, sparkling water and a little bit of coconut water.

(Yeah, I know, a tropical cocktail or white wine may appear from time to time.)

Sometimes health foods and beverages become trendy and get more accolades than they deserve.

Is coconut water one of them?

Read on to find out!

Water from coconuts has been consumed for centuries in tropical regions. Over the past decade or so, it has gained HUGE popularity here in the US and beyond.

But is it the healthy, guilt free beverage that everyone is claiming it to be?

Let's look at the claims made about coconut water.

Can it replace your sports drink?

Meh... Yes and No. Depends on what you were drinking before.

Coconut water can be a much better alternative to sugary chemical-laden sports drinks like Gatorade. Based on coconut water’s electrolyte content including potassium, sodium, calcium and magnesium, it can help you recover and hydrate.

However, with its higher sugar content, it shouldn’t be your only go-to when needing to hydrate.

I love it occasionally, but for everyday use, I recommend a specialized electrolyte product like LMNT that contain specific amounts of sodium and other electrolytes, but without the sugar.

So, IS coconut water too sugary?

There are definitely natural sugars in coconut water. Like anything, naturally filled with sugars (fruit for example), it should be consumed in moderation. At 6-9 grams of sugar per glass, it's certainly worth taking note of.

The sugars in coconut water should not deter you from enjoying a glass, but just do not do it in excess.

It also depends on your day’s total sugar consumption.

As a general rule, I would say ½ cup-1 cup of coconut water per day is good. I highly recommend you get “raw” coconut water instead of pasteurized. It tastes way better! (Harmless brand is even sold at my Cost Co!)

Can it Help You Lose Weight?

Many people struggle with weight loss for a variety of reasons, which coconut water can help you with. If you are addicted to sugary sodas, switching to coconut water is a great alternative that still tastes sweet. Plus, the hydrating effects of coconut water can support healthy metabolism leading to weight loss. But, past this, it isn’t a weight loss “miracle.”

Does it boost your adrenal health?

I say yes, it can! The minerals related to the health of your adrenal glands are potassium and sodium. Coconut water is used as the key ingredient in something called an “adrenal cocktail,” based on its high potassium content.

Below is my favorite go-to adrenal cocktail to support a healthy stress response and nourish your adrenal health! Drink first thing in am or mid-morning.

Home-made Adrenal Cocktail

½ cup coconut water

¼-½ teaspoon Cream of tartar (potassium)

¼-½ teaspoon of Celtic Sea salt (sodium boost)

½ teaspoon Vit C powder (optional)

Can it help with muscle cramps?

Coconut water may help with muscle cramping, again due its high potassium and magnesium content. But, if you are suffering from chronic muscle cramps, I suggest you fill your diet with all kinds of other potassium and magnesium rich foods and consider supplementing with those two minerals.

Does it help lower blood pressure?

Coconut water is said to help lower blood pressure, perhaps due to its high potassium and magnesium content and the fact that it includes arginine. Experts like biohacker Dave Asprey, argue that taking higher amounts of these in supplement form could more effectively lower blood pressure, without the added sugar of coconut water.

Summary:

Enjoy coconut water.

Not too much.

And hopefully sometimes out of an actual coconut!
